Amazon Web Services announces RM25.5 billion (USD6 billion) investment in Malaysia Amazon Web Services (AWS) is about to open a new regional infrastructure in Malaysia, with an investment worth RM25.5 billion until 2037.

AWS has a variety of public and private sector clients in Malaysia, involving Cybersecurity Malaysia, POS Malaysia, PayNet, Axiata Group, along with startups and small businesses like Carsome, Omesti Berhad, and StoreHub.

PayNet, Malaysia’s national payments network and shared central infrastructure for the financial market, is using AWS to run critical banking workloads, including the company’s MyDebit cashless payments system.

While Pos Malaysia, a Malaysia’s national postal and parcel service provider, is also planning to migrate the vast majority of its IT infrastructure to AWS by 2023. “As we continue on our digital transformation journey to deliver a better customer experience, our collaboration with AWS has been instrumental in streamlining our processes, reducing IT costs by 50%, and driving greater organisational agility. We are excited about the launch of an AWS region in Malaysia and look forward to incorporating deep analytics and machine learning initiatives into our operations to help further develop our products and services, enabling us to deliver smiles to the last mile,” said Sumesh Rahavendra, chief strategy and digital officer at Pos Malaysia.

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said AWS has committed to its largest international technology investment to date in Malaysia. He said, with the new AWS investment, he hopes to see a greater increase in digital transformation and digital trust in Malaysian society. "This in turn will lead to greater innovation and investment in Malaysia, pushing the country to truly become the data center of Southeast Asia and the digital hub for the region.

"(Furthermore) by bringing access to world-class AWS infrastructure, advanced technology and advanced digital skills programs to Malaysia will open up opportunities for local businesses to build and grow globally. "...fostering a digitally enabled workforce, stimulating job creation and delivering long-term economic growth," he said.

He said this while delivering a speech via a video recording broadcast at the Key Business Update: AWS Malaysia event here today.

Also present were the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Economy Minister, Rafizi Ramli and PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz.

Commenting further, Anwar said the investment will also advance Malaysia Madani's vision of a highly skilled, innovative, inclusive and sustainable economy where wealth is shared more equitably.

"Today, we have seen a large number of Malaysian companies - from startups to enterprises - transform their services and processes, resulting in greater innovation, more secure data processing and lower operating costs with Cloud Service Providers such as AWS.

"PETRONAS is an excellent example of how a leading Malaysian organization is accelerating its Digital Transformation journey by harnessing the power of the cloud to modernize IT (information technology), drive smarter operations and faster decisions through insights from data analysis, and build new digital applications such as SETEL to improve the customer experience.

"The same goes for Silverlake Axis, a financial and fintech company founded in Malaysia, which has used AWS to digitize and modernize 25 applications that allow them to offer more innovative services to their customers," he said.

The Prime Minister said that when he took over the reins of administration, he had established the concept of Madani Malaysia to focus on more equitable and prosperous economic development.
